The Dish: Aloha Roll From Mikata

The Dish: The Aloha Roll from Mikata in Atlanta. Ingredients: Inside the roll is a mixture of spicy crab and avocado. Outside the roll is garlic albacore and a special sauce.

As one of my favorite sushi bars, I tend to frequent Mikata. Often, I order the same dishes (a super tiger roll or a new york strip roll). Recently, however, something about the aloha roll caught my eye. It wasn’t until I thought, ‘I’m not sure if I’ll like this’ that prompted me to order. The first bite confused my tongue. The mix of spicy crab and avocado was nice, a bit mushy, but tangy. Yet, the albacore overpowered everything. I quickly identified it wasn’t my taste, but it reminded me to push myself to get out of my comfort zone. I guess I discovered I don’t care for albacore.

Still, I took it home to munch on during a design call later that evening. I ended up removing the top layer, and found it a bit more my taste. Would I order it again? No. But, I believe someone who enjoys spicer sushi would find this quite delicious. It’s that special sauce that gives it its significance, potent and tangy with just the right amount of bite. Wish they’d held back on the garlic albacore, though.
